Comfort Food and Yuletide

It's during these cold winter days that we really appreciate comfort food.

The setting: Pandora playing a holiday theme, candles burning brightly and fried chops, pan gravy, mashed potatoes, sautéed veggies and a delicious favorite red wine.

Peace and love. :)

The Grass is Greener - NOT!

This is what the area between the hedges and the street looked like one short week ago. The grass was dead and curb appeal was, well, unappealing.

We tossed around the idea of bringing in a landscaper, but we're not yet ready to work on the entire yard - bringing in someone to handle just this small portion of the yard would be throwing money away. Instead, we decided to tackle it ourselves.

We tilled the land with an old yard tool of my father's that's one of the best I've ever handled. I'd tell you the name but I don't know how to spell it. Anyway, it made relatively short work of the tilling.

Next, we placed the plants into the ground. We were interrupted a few times by rain but that was good for it cooled us down tremendously.

We splurged and bought ten bags of mulch to place around the plants because we couldn't wait to see how it was going to look. Then the next day I went to Griffis Lumber and bought a truckload to finish the job.

M is dutifully watering our new plantings. We aimed for full sun drought tolerant varieties.

Now, curb appeal is once again appealing.

Thanks to M for her hard work in making this a reality.

God bless! :)

Remember Good Ole Pine Straw?

Miriam took a few days off of work last week and was very productive in the yard. She found some pine straw at Griffis lumber and distributed it around the back yard.

Ah, so nice. I personally like using straw when possible. It means a tree didn't have to die to serve.

Later, Gators.

Pizza On the Barbie

Yes, there is a familiar theme in these last two posts. Sorry, but food is where it's at.

I had been wanting to make my own pizza and Miriam, bless her heart, did a google search and found a good recipe for grilled pizza. I made the dough according to the directions here and grilled the pizza according to the directions here. The result was very good. We kept it simple as you can see by the image - just cheese and mushrooms - but our next venture will get more creative. The dough recipe makes two 12" pizzas - so, we've frozen half of it and will probably grill again on Saturday. Yummo!

Fledgling in the Bush

Just wanted to show you one of our babies. It does seem likely that one chick didn't make it - we've only been able to account for two in the bush and they stay close together. No sign of the cat this weekend, thank goodness.

If you click on the picture and look carefully you can see part of the other chick, head and beak,  just below.

Ciao.

To Kill A Mockingbird.....Not On My Watch!

It all began a couple of weeks ago when I was trimming hedges in the front yard. One of our pittosporums was encroaching on both the driveway and walkway. As I was chopping away, I saw a bird's nest inside. I stopped and looked carefully and saw no eggs or chicks and thought it had been abandoned...I was wrong...

Fast forward a week or so and I hear baby chicks crying and observe parent Mockingbirds feeding and protecting this hedge - with their chicks inside. All is well, you think. Nope, not by a long shot. There's a neighborhood cat that decided it was going to wreak havoc and try to kill our babies! One evening we battled and thought he (the cat) had won. As I'm chasing him away yet again, Mir noticed that the nest had come down and the chicks had fallen out. Damn cat! But wait...the chicks were all alive...now what do we do?

We discussed options - finally decided to place the nest in a shoebox - affix shoebox to bush and place chicks back inside. So, off I ran to find a shoebox, gloves, wire, wire cutters, etc. With tools in hand, Mir placed the nest in the box, picked up the chicks and gently laid them inside on the nest and affixed the "new" nest to the bush. One of the chicks looked poorly but we hoped for the best. I was a little afraid that they would get too cold as I'm not sure how long they had been out of the nest. Sleep was difficult that night.

The next day I checked in on them during my lunch break and to my delight I saw three chicks raise their heads and beg for food. Glory be! For the next week or so we continued to do battle with the cat. Persistent little bugger. We researched and found that placing moth balls at the base of the bush (Note: place moth balls in bags as this can be very toxic if ingested) and laying chicken wire on the ground around the base of the hedge might just keep this cat away (Note: cats do not like the feel of chicken wire on their paws). As an added precaution, I also had the hose at the ready set on "jet stream", to give this cat a good soaking whenever I had the opportunity. This feline was relentless, forcing me to recall primal instincts I did not know I possessed..."YOU WILL NOT GET MY BIRDS!", I yelled.

Today when I again checked on the nest during lunch the nest was empty. The fledglings had moved on...to the ligustrums on the east side of the yard! So, I've been keeping an eye there. The parent birds are still feeding and protecting the younguns...and the cat has been absent today....we'll be sentries again tomorrow and each day, thereafter, until our young charges are grown and singing their songs.

Addendum: That damn cat is back... stalking these fledglings as they try to master the art of flight...so the battle continues...

Haircut Saturday

It's that time of the month....for a haircut.  Last month we only got a trim because we had an event to attend and didn't want to look scalped. So, this time our hair is extra long and we're looking like shaggy dogs. Do your magic, Chris!

South Beach at Midtown

We cycled to the Hawthorne Trail this morning and, on the way back, decided to check out some new construction happening in midtown Gainesville. I'm liking the changes to downtown and the surrounding area. I love the changes to main street and see downtown becoming more vibrant. It's all good, Gainesville!

The Triumvirate

On my way to the Women's Basketball banquet I passed the recently unveiled statues of the three iconic Gator football legends.

Caught in the Act

This morning while enjoying my morning coffee I looked up to see this thief with one of my peaches. Unfortunately, Peanut was not available to apprehend the varmint and retrieve my fruit. But, next time, my friend, next time.

A Valentine's Dinner

Homemade meatballs in a marinara sauce with spinach fettuccine and shaved parmigiano reggiano cheese on top. Oh, yes, and red wine.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Poor Peanut

Peanut had her first....and we hope last....root canal. Yes, folks, even dogs can have a root canal. We had the option of that or extraction but the tooth was her top right canine and we wanted to save it if possible. What did she do to cause this? She tried to chew through a chain link fence to get to another dog - her arch enemy - Sydney. Good times, my friends, good times.

The picture is her soon after coming home. She was still coming out of the anesthesia and feeling poorly at the time. You'll be happy to know that she's her old self again today wanting to play ball.

On the Road to Baton Rouge

We had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Baton Rouge, La and watch the Florida Women's Basketball team play the LSU tigers. We lost the game, but the trip was still great! Here's a good pic of Coach Butler and Coach Van Chancellor. Before each home game, Coach Chancellor tosses pieces of candy to the crowd. It was fun. Can't wait for the next road trip!
